Beard Grooming: Modern Trends vs. the 1800s

Oh, beards—forever making a statement, whether you’re in the slick streets of 2024 or the rugged landscapes of the late 1800s. But wow, how times have changed when it comes to taming those whiskers!

Back in the 1800s, a beard wasn’t just facial hair—it was a badge of masculinity, wisdom, and sometimes, social status. Grooming tools were basic at best: straight razors (yikes!), stiff boar-bristle brushes, and good ol’ bar soap for cleaning. Forget about scented beard oils or balms; if anything, a dab of bear grease was considered luxurious. The goal? Big, bushy, and bold. Just look at your grandpa’s photos.

Fast forward to today, and beards are all about precision and personality. Some like a well-shaped stubble,  or a nice fade from your barber, while others want that trendy lumberjack-worthy mane, the options are endless. Today, we have all kinds of grooming products: hydrating beard oils, scented balms, beard straighteners, and clippers with laser guides (seriously, lasers). Oh, and for the brave, we’ve got YouTube tutorials for everything, from shaping to beard growth hacks.

The biggest difference? Today, grooming is mostly about making a statement. Your beard says something about you—be it rugged, refined, or somewhere in between. Back then, it was more about fitting societal norms.

So next time you’re shaping up your beard with artisanal oil that smells like cedar-wood and bourbon, raise a glass to those 1800s pioneers. They set the standards so we could raise them.
